5 Reasons: Appreciate the Journey as Much as the Destination

The journey is as wonderful as the destination you’re heading to - if not even better. In the course of numerous hours spent on planes, trains and in cars I have realized that the moment I grab my bag in order to start a journey is the most exciting one.

You know what is lying ahead of you, yet you don’t. You might have a destination, but maybe you’re reaching for the unknown. Whatever it is: the journey is the next step and you should enjoy it as it’s unpredictable.

Here are my 5 personal reasons why the journey is at least as amazing as the destination itself - and why you should appreciate the former.

1. BEAUTIFUL SCENERY

This is the most obvious reason, especially if you are traveling by car. Oftentimes, there is so much to see and some moments might turn out to be simple but precious ones like driving along the highway while the sun is setting beautifully, for instance. Also, train rides can be very picturesque. The scenery was great when I was traveling from London to Scotland, just to give you an example.

2. YOU’RE MOVING, YET YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT AWAITS YOU

You are sitting on a train and are moving into one direction, naturally. Maybe you know where you are going but maybe you don’t. But it doesn’t really make a difference because every journey is different. Even if you know your destination already and have been there many times, you cannot be sure about how arriving there this time will be; you don’t know what this journey to your destination holds; you have no idea whether something is going to happen on this journey that will change how you perceive your destination this time. The journey can sure make the difference.

3. THE INDESCRIBABLE COMBINATION OF JOY, EXCITEMENT & FEAR

This feeling is one of the most craziest ones that will ever be had. Just image you standing at the airport, about to board a flight to destination XY, knowing an amazing adventure is lying ahead of you. Isn’t this the best, yet most intimidating feeling in the world? At least I think so. It’s like being on a roller-coaster - and that’s thrilling, right?

4. IT’S THE BEST TIME TO REFLECT UPON LIFE

Since your journey might take hours, you will have the time to just look outside of the window and let your mind wander - and wonder. This also means that you will start thinking about whether this was the right decision, whether you should have done something differently or whether this decision has been the best you’ve ever made in your life. Sitting on/in means of transport for hours and heading into one direction, namely forward, you are likely to reflect upon your life. And those are oftentimes key moments in life; those are moments, when things become crystal clear. So why not take the journey as some kind of self-discovery, a “trying to find out what I want and what life holds” journey?

5. INSPIRATION AND CREATIVITY HAVE NEVER BEEN GREATER

When you are embarking on a journey, your mind is all focused on what will come next and every once in a while, you experience a rush of adrenaline. Also, you will see different people, perceive new smells and be in new surroundings. Perfect conditions for a wave of thoughts, expectations and new ideas. Something good is going to come out of this.

What are you waiting for? Start the journey and appreciate it. Now. Because you should always keep in mind:

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” (Martin Buber)

Because it doesn’t matter how much you’ve planned in advance and whether you’ve eventually reach your desired destination: a journey always comes with a touch of the unknown.

Do you agree? Journey over destination or the other way around?
